So You’re Ready to Sell Your Book… Now What?!

It’s an exciting time when you are ready to share your book with the world – but it can be daunting to know how to begin. Following are a few tips to get started:

1. First, be cautious about giving the book away. It sound like a good thing, but people – especially friends and church members – will be glad to buy the book. This keeps up the perceived quality of the work.

2. Getting into bookstores is difficult but possible. They know there will not be a large sale of the book for them. They will take a 60% cut.

3. My suggestion is that you have books available for sale through your website and through postcard/business cards that advertise your book. You can print these inexpensively at www.VistaPrint.com. The cards should have the cover of your book and all your contact information.

4. If you are selling your books yourself, which I highly recommend, you need to charge sales tax over and above the cost of the book, so you need to check into your county to see this cost. You likely do not have to pay sales tax if you sell under $600 in books. You can take the tax amount out of your direct sales which reduces your profit or you can add the tax amount to each book when it sells.
