In my recent blog post, I shared many of my favorite things about the great state of Alabama, where I was born and raised. Many famous writers hail from Alabama, including Fannie Flagg, Truman Capote and his childhood friend Harper Lee. Lee’s forthcoming novel, Go Set A Watchman, long thought to be lost, is set to be published next month. It is one of the most highly-anticipated books in recent memory, and brings back many of the characters from her iconic To Kill A Mockingbird.
If you were to revisit a well-known literary character and add new chapters to his or her story, who would you choose – and why? Remember to do your due diligence in updating their story, and ask (and answer) some important questions: Compared to when we last saw the character, how has their physical appearance changed? Where are they living now (and with whom) and how did they get there? What do they want now (and what obstacles are standing in the way)? What else would the reader want to know about this character’s life now? Try out this exercise and share your thoughts in the comments below!
